Professional Opportunities for Graduate Students

Graduate students are encouraged to participate in the scientific and professional activities of the Animal Sciences program and of the other programs at the University of Illinois. The nutritional sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and cell and molecular biology programs frequently have seminars that are announced by posters and in the University paper, the Daily Illini. The Animal Sciences program provides seminars presented by leading researchers from other institutions as well as its own faculty and graduate students. Participation in these and other scientific events enables graduate students to develop the broad perspective in animal sciences that is expected of all students. In addition, students are encouraged to grow in their chosen areas of study through more in-depth involvement in library research, field training, applied programs, and participation in professional meetings.

The faculty welcomes student ideas and encourages both informal and formal intellectual exchanges. Graduate education is a combination of course work, research, and learning experiences outside the classroom. Graduate students are expected to assume the responsibility for participating in informal learning experiences at coffee hours and seminars. Information on these is often posted in graduate student rooms, in the Department Newsletter, and on bulletin boards.
